Having been hospitalized from 'tourista' many years ago after my honeymoon in Mexico, this all comes back to me.... I can still hear the nurses giggling...

The bottom line after spending my time on the Tropical Diseases ward, was that they couldn't identify exactly which bug I had. One of the other problems is that when you return to your home country you become reinfected with the bugs you already have and so the action sometimes flares up again. My doctor who was from India, gave me these rules, don't drink the water, don't have drinks with ice cubes in it, stay away from salads and only eat fruit that you can peel. Be careful of
rancid products because of improper refridgeration, particularly butter which sits out. I have also been told to be careful when showering, not to let water get into your mouth, (although I have yet to figure out how swimmers manage).

For honeymooners :I think stress before a wedding plays it's part in keeping one's resistance down as well. Be very careful about taking drugs sold over the counter that the local people suggest. I had Lomotil which didn't seem to work anyway. My husband was okay for the most part. He was certain it was because he gargled everday with tequila...

Take care,
Linda
