The cheapest and, especially good with children, informal restaurants are the Ryoshi Restaurants. Eat and order as much you like and you'll be surprised about the bill. They don't provide transportation, but there are several branches all over the island. Best we found the one in Legian (close to the entrance of the Legian Beach Hotel). But the one in Ubud, close to the palace, is also a lovely place. Combine early dinner with a barong dance in the palace. You won't forget it! Tickets for the Barong dance can be bought at the information center on the main road. You should make a reservation for dinner, if you want to come later than 7.30 pm, cause they are always well visited!
But: Sushi is definitely not part of Balinese cooking. One of the best balinese restaurants in a beautiful setting with reasonable prices is "Bumbu Bali" in Tanung Benoa, south of Nusa Dua (10 min by car). Please: Don't go without a reservation! Tel: 774502. For two we payed round about 40 German Mark (~ 34 Can$)and enjoyed riceplate for two, beer and lot's of fruit juices. The owner is a german cooking consultant who worked for several 6 Star Hotels on Bali. He's married to a balinese woman. Ask for coils!!!
Enjoy Bali! We had two great weeks, unfortunately they are already history. Sorry for my bad english.
