There are two types of hepatitis that you may or may not need to be worried about.
If you travel to any "third world" destination (like Bali) you should really get the Hep A vaccine. Hep A is transmitted most often through contaminated food and water, unfortunately, by having fecal matter present. In most countries, it is called Havrix 1440 (adults) or Havrix 720 (for those under 18). The single shot, will allow antibodies to persist for one year. In other words, if this is your only trip EVER, than you will be protected for one year. However, it is highly recommended to get the second dose. If you get the booster shot (any time between 6-12 months after the first one), then you will at least be covered for 10 years. Some studies even suggest up to 20 years!
Hep B, on the other hand, is mainly transmitted through blood, semen and other body fluids. It is only necessary if you are going to be at this kind of risk. Usually, if you are going to be sexually active. Then you should consider the Engerix B vaccine. The 3 dose schedule is: now, in 1 month, and in 6 months. This gives you protection for approx. 10 years.
There is also a combo shot. It is called Twinrix. If you are thinking about getting both, then you should really consider this one. It is only 3 shot. If you were doing them seperately, you would have had 5. And in Canada, it is much cheaper. Since I work in the medical field, this is the one I went for.
I hope this is helpful. Check with your own Dr to see what they suggest. Ultimately, it is your choice.
