Are you sure you didn't get stung by jellyfish? Did you see any of those? In Jamaica last year, I got kinda trapped amidst a whole school(?) of them. It was just awful. I'm not really scared of too much in the waters, but it was terrible being in the middle of literally thousands of jellyfish! There was nothing I could do, but get stung. I guess I sort of have a "thing" with them now, and like to avoid them whenever possible.
Any other "beasties" in the waters to be careful of?

P.S. Don't want Jamaica to sound bad. Just to clarify, it was only in that one area that there happened to be a jellyfish problem.
