Of all the airlines I've traveled with (& that is a few), Singapore is one of the very best.
As for smoking, just tell him he can light up as soon as he gets off the plane in Bali. In Bali smoking is allowed everywhere & the smokes are cheap, but tell him to buy them in the supermarkets not from the street vendors - a true smokers paradise :)
