Not knowing neither you nor the girl, I will never know for sure.
But look at it this way - at worst you have helped a family who more than likely needs the money more than you or me. At the same time it sounds like you have had a great time both with the girl, her family and the village - the experience you have had there is worth a lot more than just money, so even if you have been "taken for a fool" at least you have had something very special if only for a short time.
Having said all that, maybe she told the truth !!!! never give up hope & never turn your back on the wonders of love.
