Or so I'm told! On a trip to North Bali I asked my guide about Balinese spiritual beliefs. He went on to explain the process of reincarnation, the balance between good and evil (hence their daily offerings) and the meaning of animal sacrifice to the gods. I asked him what sort of animals were sacrificed to their gods and yes .... man's best friend was part of that list. Here I was thinking my lucky dog Daisy was back home safe and sound and enjoying a holiday at the very expensive and well-recommended boarding kennels. BUT .... arrived home to find our usually robust Daisy half-starved and very ill with a form ofl kennel cough - contracted from a contaminated room mate. Back to sacrificial dogs ..... my guide told me when I expressed shock that dogs were sacrifical offerings that this was very good karma for the dogs - they could look forward to being reincarnated as human beings on their next outing to earth. I took the opportunity to whisper this reassuring little thought into the ears of a few hairless, on their last legs pooches lying around the streets of Kuta. Not a dog's life in Bali I'd say.
