We just got back from our Bali tour yesterday. We were supposed to stay at Rama Baruna Hotel but our travel agent said it was fully booked. Thank God we didn't stay there because our friends who we traveled with us stayed there and complained about their rooms. They said it looked unsanitary when they first got in.
I even asked the locals who were familiar w/ the Bali hotels for their comments/opinions about Rama Baruna so we can make a comparison to Risata Hotel where we stayed. They all preferred the Risata over Baruna. They also mentioned that they've met tourists complaining also about the rooms and it's cleanliness.
If you're still looking for a place to stay, consider the Risata Beach Hotel Resort. They have a beautiful garden, clean pool, quiet and very friendly staff and great service. It's located in Tuban but, Kuta is just walking distance. Might need a cab for to get to the heart of Kuta.
You can pay anywhere from US$10-$25 for a driver and car/van to drive you anywhere you want all day. We hired one from 9 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. for $20. It is not customary to give tips and they feel embarassed to receive them unless you insist.
