I've heard of the scam BaliJo refers to and have friends who've run into a similar thing (though the "payoff" these women were looking for was also in the form of a green card, as well as cash) in Thailand, Russia and Kenya.
While anyting but stupid (on either of your parts), it sure does "pee in your Wheaties" as one of my almost-duped friends is fond of saying.
At least you haven't sent the cash. Hope you have other not-so-sordid Bali memories to reflect on!
Chalk it up as one of those "learning experiences."
