We just got back after taking Malaysia Airlines via Newark for $905 RT. Though I know that's not right from your gateway, they do have relatively low add-on fares using US carriers to get you to Newark. Flight was on a Boeing 777, which really made a difference on what totalled up to a 24-hour flight. The 777 in Economy has 2-5-2 configuration across the wide body. If you get the 2 - window/aisle you don't feel scrunched at all. They also have video screens in the back of each seat for every passenger. Lots of videos (8 channels) and Nintendo games. Food was better than your average US carrier and all drinks were included.
The connection goes east through Dubai (United Arab Emirates) and Kuala Lumpur. They put you up for free at an airport hotel in Kuala Lumpur because you get there at 8pm. That worked out well because it gave us a chance to begin adjusting to the 12 time zone change. On the next morning to Bali - a 3-hour easy flight that gets you in at noon Bali time.
I also looked at the Cathay Pacific Asia Pass, but it required that I pay for an overnight in Hong Kong, and I knew that the new airport was far outside the city. Hotels, from what I researched, are not cheap in Hong Kong.
Hope this helps.
