Hello all:

Moved back to the Mastapa after being informed that I could only stay one more night at hte Adi Dharam as they were booked thru the rest of the week. Mastapa lowered their rate to US $22.

Went to Ocean Blue Hotel to p/u a package of clothing samples from a manufacturer in Surabaya. Told manufacturer to send it there as I intended to stay there (see Day 1). Front desk people puzzled as to why I would have a package sent to a hotel where I wasn't a guest. With a bit of explanation and ID, they released it to me. Nice stuff, should sell well in USA.

Went to several Kuta-based manufacturers today. All were too busy to take smaller garment orders (100-200 pieces). Good sign for local economy.

After that, went to just about every retail children's shop in Kuta. Open-air vendors have much better prices than glass-doored shops. Found better prices in evening (7-9 pm). Purchased 15 children's garments (dresses, one-piece outfits, etc.) for about US $25. Intend to take back at least 100 garments.

Saw 2 motorcycle accidents last night. No way I'd drive in Kuta. Let the experts handle that!

Bounty Hotel offering 50% discount on room rates. Nice place, but booked thru 10/25.

Felt a bit ragged after negotiating all day. Had a great dinner last night at Ketupat Restaurant in Kuta. Highly recommended!

Hawkers seem to focus on couples and groups. They pretty much leave me alone. Saw a tourist screaming at a hawker to get away. Ugly scene. Remember folks, we're the visitors. When one hawker found out I was American, he went into this L.A. gangster rap thing. I had to laugh. Hope the world doesn't think tht all Americans are gangster rappers. Balinese are such friendly people. Can't wait to see Ubud.

Last bit of advice. Don't bring a ton a clothes here. Get your laundry done here. In by 8:00 am, out by 5:00 pm, washed and pressed.

THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT REPLIES! It's nice to sip a cup of local coffee in the morning and post the day's events. I've noticed at least one person doesn't like it, but he can go to hell.

I'll try to answer as much e-mail as possible.

Take care folks.

Keith.
