We just got back last week from a month in Bali. Look at the rates of all the Money Changers at the airport before converting money & I wouldn't convert more than $50 there. Rates are better elsewhere.
We stayed at Pramesti Bungalows (last 0f 3 places we stayed at Ubud)in Ubud and we very pleased. Find on Monkey Forest Road. Also when in Ubud I reccomend Wayan of "Three Brothers" just a few doors down from Pramesti.
WE were not interested in alchol or loud music and found Candidasa a nice place to be. Not much sand on beach but very nice place away from throngs of tourists. Ida's was a wonderfull place to stay right on the main drag.
Have fun! and don't worry about reservations for a place to stay you will do allright even if you move after one night you won't be locked in to any one place.
