The cheapest way to use your handphone in Bali is to buy a SIMPATI Card from any Telkomsel agent or at Fuji Image Plaza in Kuta. You buy the "Starter Kit" for 125,000 Rupiah which includes the card with your number, and 25,000 Rupiah worth of connect time. Subsequently you buy vouchers for either 100,000 Rupiah or 200,000 Rupiah which are credited to your account.
This way you can make immediately local and international calls (up to the credit in your account). Receiving calls is free, local calls are debited at 675 Rupiah per minute, calls to Australia at 5,750 Rupiah per minute, and to the USA and Europe at 7,500 Rupiah per minute.
