Returned two weeks ago. Took ONLY $NZ100 notes - no problems whatsoever. Just make absolutely sure that the notes are PERFECT - the slightest rip, pencil mark etc will render them unexchangeable.
Exchanged ONLY at money changers (no commission) after assessing the different rates, two of us cross checked, used calculator and took sensible precautions and NOT ONCE were we "ripped off". The only reason we can think of as to why this should have been so is that we only changed money in Sanur and Ubud - maybe it is the Kuta changers one has to take supreme security measures with?
If you are staying in the Sanur area I can suggest a money changer who actually has a list on the wall of how to ensure you aren't "ripped off"!!!!!
