Fred,
When we went mid September we took hand luggage only. Our soft sports bags only easily fitted a few shirts, underwear, shorts, a couple of dresses and toiletries.
We bought one large soft sports bag (for about 85,000rp - AUS$15) to take back at the end of our trip for all the goodies we'd bought to be stowed under carriage. We didn't need two but if you want to use up your weight quota obviously you could.
We did it this way as we travelled around a bit so didn't want to lug cases around. If you're staying in one hotel the whole time you could take empty suitcases with you.
It's true you need take very little. Wear warmer clothes on the plane (jeans/pants) but be prepared to switch to a light T-shirt before you get off the plane. Otherwise only shorts and a T'shirt or two are required. You can easily fit all you need in hand luggage. It's hot - you'll need very few clothes and can buy there - just don't forget any extras that will make your trip easier - Imodium, pain killers, hair dryer (I for one was surprised even some of the posher hotels don't have them)
