Ubud or Candi Dasa?

Going to Bali as two couples Nov/Dec. Mostly staying at Hotel Mandira Legian/Kuta for the must-do shopping bits.
Also spending several days travelling around and looking to stay in Ubud and/or Candi Dasa. I have been in Ubud several years ago but never to Candi Dasa. Any suggestions? In particular the Water Gardens at CD look pretty good.
