Inonesians do not normally show affection for the opposite sex in public whether it is holding hands or kissing. Intamacy is a very private thing and it is no wonder you were the centre of attraction. I other parts of Indonesia it is common to see females holding hands wth each other and males holding hands in public. This is not taboo but an accepted practice. I'm surprised your girlfriend allowed you to kiss her in public anyway. One rarely sees two Indonesians kissing in public let alone a big bule guy and a local lady.
My advise is to save your amourous inclinations for the privacy of your hotel or secluded beach in the future.
I have been happily married to an Indonesian lady for over 12 years and we really enjoy our intimate moments in private however when I go to Bali I sometimes hold hands when we cross the streets.......
