Our travels while on Bali focused in the south, east, north and central. We had hoped to get to the west and the Nat'l Park, but had so much fun in the east (Amed) that we scrapped the plans to go west (young man). FYI, Nyoman is originally from the west, so he was quite eager to show this very un-touristy part of the island to us. Aside from the Nat'l Park and Reptile/Bird Sanctuary, he also told us (and I read about) the fact that you run a better chance of seeing more unusual traditional Balinese activities such as: 1) a different type of gamelan they play out there; 2) the possibility of seeing ox cart racing and cricket fighting (complete with a very active gambling element); and 3) the night market in the town in the NW where the ferries from Java arrive (forget the name at this time).
Guess we'll have to wait until next time.
Anyway, highly recommended of what we did do/see include the FSJB, shopping in Ubud, dinner at the Amandari, fullmoon ceremony at a local temple near Keliki, the seclusion of Amed, and basically just rolling through the Balinese countryside.
Things we could've done w/o: Kuta (unless you're really into shopping), the hawkers at the lookout at Mt Batur, and Git git waterfall.
If you have specific Qs you want answered before you leave, just repost.
Happy Trails!
