I first went to Bali in 1979, I spent three weeks in Kuta / Legian and loved it. Partied nearly 24 hours!
I have been going back there every year or so since, except for several years in the mid 80's when I lived and worked in Jakarta. When I was living there I continued to go back to Kuta beach and I am going again in January next year. Yes, Kuta has changed and yes it may seem dirty and sleezy if you compare it to western standards. But why do you need to compare it? It is a third world country not an extension of your own country. I honestly feel you will have a ball in Kuta, so much to do and see. Just blend in with the surroundings, accept it that you are not at home and you will feel it is a great adventure. Eat the local food, make friends with locals, don't believe everything you hear from locals or tourists. Visit Denpasar, try everything you can when you're there, the fruit, durian, mangosteen, just remember to use common sence. I'm not saying Kuta beach is the best part of Bali but you will have a good time there.
See if you can keep out of McDonalds!
Selamat Jalan!
