I feel bound to comment upon the claims made by Janey, in case others are put off.
I was in bali in July, and couldn't disagree more with Janey's comments.Sure there is the hassling, but it is part of the game. If you so no politely a couple of times, you will be left alone. In most cases, hawkers do not come in to the restaurants. Janey, you must have really looked like a newcomer - I never had any problem getting the right price (shown price) for basics like water, even cocacola on the beach is 2000 rupiah, and no one tried to ask more. The first price for hair braiding, watches and those sorts of things is always high, but never what you claim - you must really have looked like you just stepped off the boat!
My advice is to get a dark tan as quick as you can. when you look like youve been there for a while, you really do get left alone.The main point however, is that the folks are only trying to make a living - go with the flow - don't be rude, but be insistent. If people take Bali for Bali,all will have a terrific time. I can't wait to go back.
