Janey, I've just come back from my second trip to Bali and I'm a 57 year old fuss-pot. We just haven't had the horrid experiences you relate, BUT we stay away from Kuta and the like. We have had idyllic times in Ubud and Lombok, and will return for more. It's the same as Blackpool or Surfers Paradise, if you go there you will have that experience to some extent no matter who you are and what your tastes are. But go to the Pennines 10 miles inland or the mountains in from Surfers and it's a different world. Kuta is not representative of Bali, Nusa is not representative of Bali, despite the earlier debate we had about "the real Bali". They are there as a product of mass tourism to cater for the masses and that's all. Even Ubud is of course not representative of the rest of Bali, and one could have a bad time there too, but you'd have to be very unlucky or still not know what you really want! John
