Chris,I have snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef as well as in Bali. Snorkeling is a state of mind, so if your mind-set is good, you'll have a good time.
Some things that help me are as follows:Don't make it hard. Like in life,if you go with the flow, you don't have to row. If the current is going to the left,go left. If what you want to see is to the right, walk down the beach past where you want to be and "flow" back to it. Go on a calm, sunny morning. Take some cooked rice in a plastic bag and you will have plenty of "friends". Don't eat just before you go,go at least one hour afterwards.Drink plenty of water as sea water is a dieuretic and coupled with heat and humidity can add to dehydration.
Know what you like and pick your spot accordingly. For wrecks, try Tolumben. Walls, try Pulau Menjangan.Coral, try Candi Dasa. Yes,Candi Dasa.It is perhaps the most damaged near shore of all Bali's beaches. It has strong waves and is certainly not very safe for a novice but.......water turbulence is condusive to thriving coral! A calm, mellow spot is the Blue Lagoon near Padang Bai. Cool water can be found at White Sands (Pasir Putih) towards Amed (another good spot)from Candi Dasa.
There are many others. Just ask and go with the flow. Enjoy!
