As per my reply to a message a few up from this I came back last week and exclusively used VISA - I only changed a small amount of cash once at the airport. My only comment is that my boyfriend had a Cirrus card as well and it did help that this widened our chose of ATMs - sometimes one was operational while another was out of order etc.
Cash is fine and if you are outside the bigger centres (Kuta etc, or Ubud) then you won't find any ATMs.
