Rebe,
I came back last week and had taken AUS$300 in cash with me for a 2 week trip.
After all the warnings about money changers in the end I actually found it better for my peace of mind to use ATMs, as in Kuta at least they're everywhere. There are also a couple in Ubud. We changed money once at the airport (not as good a rate as in town but not too bad - certainly better than the hotels) and never used my cash after that. Travellers cheques do not get as good a rate as cash and I believe are not accepted by all money changers. If you are concerned about security ATMs are the best way to go. Just take some cash as a back up.
