There are so many good hotels in Ubud, at least 40 just in the main part of town.
I can recommend Ananda, although bugs may be a problem, there are no windows with glass. I highly recommend Pertiwi Bungalows and
perhaps Villa Bukit, although my phone was broken. Also you might try the Ubud Palace, an actual palace which has been converted into a
hotel with 9 rooms. You can actually just show up at hotels and see if they have rooms available, which is very likely.

I agree the guide books don't really give you enough practical information. Ubud is such a wonderful place you will love it.
For restaurants I recommend Aris Warung or Cafe Wayan.
