I was recently on Bali and found the Serai Hotel in Candidasa to be a very romantic hotel - we booked a standard room for $100 US (corporate rate - usual rate in low season for $120). Rooms are simple but nice in slate and stone and scrupulously clean (no mildew), but the big pool near the ocean with coconut palms overhead, lots of loungers, thick towels were the highlight. The restaurant is excellent, and the atmosphere serene, surrounded by lilly ponds. Good service, presentation on huge, hand-fired plates. Nice beverage was the ginger lemonade. Afterwards, we wandered over to hear a duo playing the bamboo xylophone, alternating with the sounds of the surf. Nice way to go to sleep. Price is reasonable if you can't afford the Amankila nearby. The Serai (sister hotel of the Chedi) is actually in the Manggis area just outside of Candidasa. Highly recommended.
