Natasha,

KITAS stands for Kartu Ijin Tinggal Sementara.

Most foreigners working here are either either technicians,
mamagement (in hotels, trading companies etc).

Re property acquisitions, please find here an excerpt
from our 'Property Report' which we have recently compiled
for our clients to answer these questions:-

QUOTE:

Can foreigners own or rent property in Indonesia ?
--------------------------------------------------
The only straight answer to both these questions is a clear
NO. At present foreigners CAN NEITHER OWN NOR RENT PROPERTY
in Bali or anywhere else in Indonesia! These laws might be
changed one day, but right now (1997) nothing in this respect
has been confirmed.

There is much talk about foreigners getting the right to own
condominiums in Jakarta or certain lodgings in other parts of
the country, but even this will not be ownership in the sense
of free-hold since these new rights will be valid only for 20
years, and the new regulation will apply only to foreigners
holding a permanent residence permit and not to foreign resi-
dents with only one-year working and stay permits.
Moreover, in case these foreigners loose their permanent resi-
dence status for some reason (this does happen in Indonesia),
they will not be qualified to "own" their property any more!

As mentioned above, foreigners (without a permanent residence
permit) are also not allowed to rent or lease property --
even if some lawyers and notaries in Bali tell you otherwise!"

This report answers all questions re where in Bali to buy land, ]
building and maintenance of houses, how to do the legal
arrangements, etc. and is available for US$49.
