I have used Booking.Com for 2 trips to Vietnam, 1 trip to Thailand for 7 different hotels (both times) for up to 12 people and never had a problem.
As they are purely a booking agency you do not have pay upfront...you pay the hotel when you either arrive or leave.
You get instant confirmation when you book, just print out the confirmation and take it with you.
The also have a very good cancellation policy (still check hotel site on Booking.Com for info) but most of the hotels I booked through them allowed you free cancellation of the room up to 3 days prior to your arrival.
We have just booked another 5 hotels through Booking.Com for our next trip in June 2012.
