Everyone buys fireworks and they start letting them off about 8pm and it goes through till about 3 or 4 in the morning.
Make up your mind earlier in the day where you want to be for the evening and night because Taksi's ONLY work on agreed amounts. They are very much in demand, and get (something like) 200,000rp to go, even, only a short distance.
Restaurants usually have a set menu for new year that starts about 7pm, up until then it is still a la carte.
There is usually a lot of activity at the beach, and lots of people around in Jln Laksmana (Oberoi/eat street).
