As Baliboy said, turn of data roaming. Also, when I was there I always had the celular data turned off and turned it on once I got to a wifi place. Just in case it did something I wasn't aware of.
My bill was not affected at all through the process.
It's very handy for quick pics too and uploading to wherever you want..
