The key is to turn off data roaming IF she wants to get the free wifi that is available at most bars, restaurants etc. That way she can still get calls (though there is an inbound cost), txt etc. Even better - grab a local SIM when she arrives (I get one out the back of the Bintang supermarket at a really helpful little store that has been there for years) and then she can call and txt really cheaply. Data is also available with the SIM for a very good price though with all the free wifi around you don't really need the data. The shop will help her put the SIM in, load it up etc.
