I go for a month each year and it's still not enough time - but sadly I only get 4 weeks annual leave a year :)
For a shorter trip, I would tend to recommend doing an organised trip or activity every send day. If you're planning 5 things, I would think 10-11 nights would be the minimum time you'd need. Your first and last days are generally write offs with checking in, settling in (especially for first timers) getting your bearings etc. I'd think even the second day would be more for exploring your immediate surrounds, shops, restaurants etc.
5 days of trips and activities out of a 9 night stay would leave me feeling like I needed a holiday!
