Its just not every passenger always knows about it. I have twice been affected by an overbooked flight. Once, travelling to India, where we were sent through to the departure lounge with no seat allocation and were made to sit and wait until almost takeoff before we were given seats. Another time we were offered an upgrade and financial compensation if we took an earlier flight with Qantas, which we agreed to.
