This is a story we were told by locals who we rowed around the lake with.
It goes something like this. When the Japanese realized there were going to lose the battle in Bali and the war they (a group I do not know how many) starting to dig these holes or tunnels if you like (nothing like the VC's) to last as long as they could. The Balinese knew they were there and carried out attacks on the tunnels in the way of catching the Japanese in the tunnels and setting fire at the entrance and when they came out they were killed. This we were told happened as well near Klungkung. We have been to both and they do not go far into the earth and not very big.
Worth a look but only to say you saw them.
The tunnels in Vietnam are as you have seen them on the TV. These are real tunnels as I saw in 65/66.
They are open but get a guide to take you in the boat. They might even charge to go in now but I am not sure.
Once you have seen one they are mostly the same very damp and small inside but not deep in.
