I would take as much cash as you are comfortable with, travellers cheques and rely on visa (or whatever) for balance and emergency. Most money changers where I have been change them and rates are good, no fees. Check out money changers when you are changing cash. Watch the scenario of having TCs left over at the end and the need to change them back in Oz as that may cost you.
